SLATTERY’S BAR

The World Famous Slattery’s Bar was established
in 1870 and has many original Victorian features.
It has hosted some of the greats of Irish music; U.2
and Thin Lizzy had gigs here while Van Morrison,
Christy Moore and The Chieftans were regulars.
This tradition continues today with live music
every weekend. Slattery’s is open from 7am daily
and serves the best Irish breakfast in Dublin, as
recommended by Anthony Bourdain. Food is served until late. Live sports are
shown on big screens and if its Guinness you are after, you won’t find a better pint.”
You can smell St James gate from the front door”! During the Easter Rising, Slattery’s
provided shelter and sustenance to rebels during the worst of the fighting at the
nearby GPO. Their excellent 1916 commemorative wall is not to be missed. As well
as photographs they have interesting authentic uniforms, medals, documents and
weaponry on view.

Established in 1899, Grogan’s is a traditional
Dublin pub that has been and still is a haunt
of Ireland’s artistic avant-garde including
literary greats such as Patrick Kavanagh, Flann
O’Brien, J.P. Donleavy and Liam O’Flaherty.
Traditional to the core, there are no TV
screens or background music, just amiable,
welcoming bar staff with plenty of stories to
tell. None more so than the joint proprietor
Tommy Smith who has been watching the scene for over 40 years. The interior has
a 1950s feel and continuing its association with the arts, the walls are festooned
with paintings by local artists which are for sale on a non- commission basis.
Outdoor seating spills onto Castle Market making it a busy hub on the street.
The ambiance attracts an eclectic mix of students, business suits, old fashioned
drinkers and Dublin’s glamorous youth, who meet to talk and mingle or just have
a few quite drinks in peace.
