  • Belfast City Hall

A magnificent sight, especially when viewed from Royal Avenue, this imposing Portland stone and copper-domed building was completed in 1906 as a symbol of Belfast’s new city status. Queen Victoria stands at the front, and the grounds are dotted with many more statues and monuments, details of which can be found on a large map at the gates. In 1995 the building provided a dramatic backdrop when President Clinton switched on the city’s Christmas lights. A recent £11m refurbishment programme has seen the old girl spruced up and ready, once again, to receive visitors. Check out The Bobbin cafe, whose name reflects Belfast’s linen-making past, and No Mean City exhibition. And take a free 45min guided tour for a behind the scenes glimpse at this iconic building.

  • Clifton house

Clifton House (1774) is where the history of Belfast begins! Originally opened as a Poor House thousands of people; locals, young and old and passing sailors, sought sanctuary within its walls. Join our tours and walk in their footsteps and hear about the lives of the less privileged. Visit Clifton Street Cemetery, the resting place of Mary Ann & Henry Joy McCracken; poets and artists; American slaves; wealthy families buried alongside the victims of the Famine. • Harbour Commissioners Office

The earliest building (east front) was designed in 1854 by the Board engineer George Smith with a clock tower to regulate sailings. The second phase in 1895 (Corporation Square) contains the splendid public rooms; the modern office block was added in 1970.

The headquarters of the Harbour Commissioners, responsible for overseeing the development and running of Belfast Port, has on show the magnificent captain’s table and chairs which Gilbert Logan designed for Titanic, but which were delivered just too late (it is said they were subsequently shipped to Southampton, just in time to see Titanic disappear on the horizon). Lord Pirrie, himself a Harbour Commissioner, would have been a frequent, and persuasive, presence in the boardroom. Nearby, are two restored graving docks used by William Ritchie, Belfast’s first major shipbuilder.

  • The Gasworks

The Gasworks distinctive funnel and clock tower mark the place where the city’s gas-making industry began production in the 19th century.  The area offers a quiet place to escape from the bustle of the nearby city centre and  makes an ideal starting point for a pleasant walk or cycle along the River Lagan towards Donegall Quay or upstream towards the Lagan Towpath and Lagan Valley Regional Park.

Gasworks has been the site of Belfast’s gas-making industry since the 19th century. The site, built on ground owned by the Marquis of Donegall, opened in 1822 and supplied gas for street lighting and domestic and industrial use.

Belfast Corporation (now the Belfast City Council) used their profits from the gas industry to pay for the construction of Belfast City Hall, which opened in 1906.

By the end of World War II in 1945, around 120,000 people were using gas from the Gasworks site. However, by the 1960s, demand declined as new technologies began to emerge and production finally stopped altogether in 1985.

The Gasworks site was purchased by the council, together with central government and the Laganside Corporation, in the early 1990s. The land was considered unsuitable for most uses, due to contamination, but a major refurbishment programme, part-funded by the European Union, soon turned the area into a modern business park.

  • St Patrick’s Cathedral

Over 800 years old, Ireland’s largest church and the island’s National Cathedral for the Church of Ireland was founded beside a sacred well where Saint Patrick is said to have converted pagans to Christianity. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, was Dean from 1713-1745. He is buried near the entrance and his death mask and a selection of artefacts are on display. The World War I exhibition is also not to be missed. In 1742 Handel’s Messiah was premiered in the Cathedral and a strong singing tradition continues today, with two sung services daily (except Sat) during school term – the only Cathedral to do so in Britain and Ireland. Perhaps more than any other
building in Ireland, Saint Patrick’s embodies the history and heritage of Irish people of all backgrounds from the earliest times to the present day. Come and enjoy one of Dublin’s most popular tourist attractions and celebrate its place in the life of the city, its history and role in the future.

  • St. Michan’s Church

Originally founded in 1095 present church dates from 1685, was renovated in 1825 and largely remains unchanged since Victorian times. The Church of Ireland parish houses what must be the city’s most extraordinary attraction. Due to an unusual combination of magnesium salts in limestone, the crypts beneath the church are without any moisture, resulting in the perfect preservation of those buried within. Four damaged coffins reveal their inhabitants, and the dungeon-like setting makes it quite a spine-tingling sight. The adjacent crypt contains the ornate coffins of The Earl of Leitrim’s family as well as artefacts and coffins from the 1798 Rising and death mask of Irish revolutionary Wolfe Tone.

Open: March to Oct Mon-Fri 10am-12.45pm & 2pm-4.45pm (closed 1pm-2pm). Nov to March Mon-Fri 12.30pm-3.30pm. Sat 10am-12.45pm. May close for tours due to weddings, funerals and other church events. Adults €7 Students/Concessions €5.

  • The Old Library & the Book of Kells Exhibition

Founded in 1592, Trinity College is Ireland’s oldest university and alma mater of Wilde, Yeats and Beckett, among many other Irish luminaries. It is also home to two must-see attractions, the Long Room and Book of Kells.
Written around the year 800AD by Columban monks and regarded as the finest surviving example of Irish Celtic art, the Book of Kells is a highly decorative vellum copy in Latin of the four gospels. Richly illustrated with many-hued letters and pictorials incorporating animals, humans and Biblical scenes, this exquisite manuscript reveals a seemingly inexhaustible wealth of supremely detailed ornamentation upon each close inspection.
The Book’s name comes from the Abbey of Kells in Co. Meath where it was reputed to
have been (at least partly) written, though its exact origins remain unclear. In the 1650s, the Book was moved to Dublin for safekeeping and presented to Trinity College Dublin’s Library in 1661. Originally a single volume, for conservation reasons it has been rebound into four volumes, two of which are normally on display showing examples of script and illustration. Visits are self guided (allow 40mins to 1hr), with displays telling the history of the Book of Kells and other historic manuscripts.
The 18th century Long Room features a stunning 12.6m high timber barrel vaulted ceiling and houses around 200,000 antiquarian tomes on 65metres of open oak shelves. Rows of marble busts, Ireland’s oldest harp, changing exhibits and an original copy of the 1916. Proclamation of the Irish Republic are also on display.

  • Malahide Castle & Gardens

This magnificent 12th century castle is set in 260 acres of land and is one of the oldest castles in Ireland. It has been home to the Talbot family for nearly 800 years from 1174, when Richard Talbot, a knight of Henry ll, accompanied the king to Ireland and was given the “lands and harbour of Malahide” for his “war-like” services in the Anglo-Norman conquest. Eleven years’ later the Castle was built as the family seat, and remained so until 1975, save for ten years when it fell into Cromwell’s clutches.

Today friendly guides and a brand new interactive exhibition help you explore its rich history and interior. Visit the Oak Room, Small and Great Drawing Rooms and the Great Hall before heading to the Walled Garden, home to some of the world’s rarest plants. The interactive garden exhibition tells the story of Lord Milo Talbot – the visionary behind this fascinating collection and the last Lord of Malahide who died in 1973. The Demesne has marked pathways, a children’s playground, picnic sites, and sports facilities including 9-hole golf course. Back at the Castle, a gift shop and Avoca foodhall, café and retail store complete this enchanting daytrip. Find it 13kms north of Dublin on the DART line.

  • KENNEDY’S

Mrs Kennedy quickly realised that installing

  • THE SWAN BAR

This icon of Irish licensed heritage has dispensed
sustenance, shelter and social culture to the citizenry
of Dublin for at least six centuries. Totally unique amongst
Dublin pubs, The Swan is an authentic
Victorian pub that was once a medieval inn. There has
been a continuous licence on this site since 1661 when
Sir Francis Aungier developed what was then Dublin’s
widest street. The interior dates from 1897 and is one
of the few remaining intact Victorian bars left in the city.
The pub has played a key role in the evolution of the Irish
nation as the premises was occupied by the Irish volunteers
in 1916 and again by the anti-treaty forces in 1922. The
pockmarks of artillery fire are still clearly visible on the
exterior of the building. The pub was bought in 1937 by
Cavan man John Lynch; his son Sean attained sporting fame
playing rugby for Leinster, Ireland and The British and
Irish Lions. He has the distinction of playing in all four
tests in the only Lions team ever to beat the New Zealand
All Blacks in the 1971 test series. The pub has a lot of
Sean’s rugby memorabilia on display. Call in and experience
The Swan which is unique among Dublin’s pub scene.

  • The Mournes

The most famous of the mountains in the country

The Mournes are visited by many tourists, hillwalkers, cyclists and rock climbers. The mountains are immortalised in a song written by Percy French in 1896, ‘Mountains o’Mourne’ and famously by Don McLean. They also influenced C.S. Lewis to write The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

The climb to Slieve Donard Summit can be strenuous but worth it for spectacular views; the Co. Down coast, Newcastle town, Murlough Dunes and on a clear day Scrabo Tower to the North and the Isle of Man to the East.

The Glen River Path leads up to the saddle, or col, between Donard and Commedagh and the Mourne Wall, a well known feature in the Mournes.

One of the last active granite quarries in the Mournes is Thomas’s Quarry. It is from here the 47 tonne, 40 feet (12m) long Delamont Millennium stone was quarried, the highest modern standing stone in Northern Ireland.

Another place to explore is Bloody Bridge. The name refers to a massacre at the site during the 1641 rebellion; the bodies of slain prisoners were thrown over the bridge into the river, turning the water red.

Finally, take a wander along the Mourne Coast Path, which is hugely important for the access it affords visitors to an otherwise generally inaccessible coastline.

The paths run from the rocky coastline of Dundrum Bay to the lower slopes of the Mourne Mountains, linking ‘true’ mountain with open sea.

Ballykilcavan Farm, in the heart of Ireland, has been the home of the Walsh family for 13 generations since 1639. We have just opened a small craft brewery in a 230 year old stone farm building, and are brewing small batch, hand-made craft beers. We grow all our own barley on the farm and our water comes from a well in the 18th century farmyard just behind the brewery. We have also established a small hop garden near the brewery. Join us for a fully guided tour to experience the history of the family and farm and see all around our new brewery. You’ll get to smell the hops, taste the different malts we make from our barley and then sample our range of multi-award winning beers.

  • Kinnegar Brewing

Kinnegar pairs brewing tradition with a contemporary sense of adventure to produce clean, crisp, full-flavouredbeers. The beer is brewed and packaged at K2, a state of the- art facility in Letterkenny, County Donegal, just up the road from the brewery’s first home in Rathmullan. While the clinking of bottles coming off the line now no longer mingles with the bleating of sheep from the surrounding fields, the farmhouse ethos at the core of what Kinnegar does remains unchanged. Unfiltered and unpasteurised, the beers are carbonated naturally during fermentation. • Whitewater Brewery

Our adventures got up and flowing on the banks of the Whitewater in 1996. Upriver in the Mountains of Mourne, on our 5th generation family farm. Over the years we experimented and produced many different beers. Some of them firsts of their kind in Ireland, some of them lasts of their kind, and some still remain with us to this day. With hard work and perseverance our beer, born in a barn by the river, was really flowing. Until eventually we reached a point where we needed a “bigger shed.” Now we are proud to open our new home for the Whitewater Brewing Company and Tap House. Brewery Tours (please book in advance) We’ll show you round our brewery, and how we make some of our award-winning brews, then head back to the new tap house where you can try some ales & hear some tales.

  • Dingle Whiskey Distillery

The Dingle Whiskey Distillery came into being in Winter 2012 and was founded by three independent spirits Oliver Hughes, Liam LaHart and Peter Mosley. We have always had quality over quantity at the forefront of our thoughts. We never had any interest in distilling enormous quantities of bland whiskey. We aren’t passionate about bland spirit. We’re hugely passionate about flavoursome, well-crafted spirit. To achieve the flavours we want to achieve in our whiskey, we use three distinctive, hand-crafted copper pot stills to create what we believe is the ultimate Irish whiskey. Their distinctive design, encourages reflux and has much to do with the remarkable smoothness and purity of our spirit. Alongside regular small batches of Dingle Whiskey, we produce award-winning Dingle Vodka and Dingle Gin. Dingle Gin was awarded the title of World’s Best Gin at the World Gin Awards 2019.
