Belfast City Hall

A magnificent sight, especially when viewed from Royal Avenue, this imposing Portland stone and copper-domed building was completed in 1906 as a symbol of Belfast’s new city status. Queen Victoria stands at the front, and the grounds are dotted with many more statues and monuments, details of which can be found on a large map at the gates. In 1995 the building provided a dramatic backdrop when President Clinton switched on the city’s Christmas lights. A recent £11m refurbishment programme has seen the old girl spruced up and ready, once again, to receive visitors. Check out The Bobbin cafe, whose name reflects Belfast’s linen-making past, and No Mean City exhibition. And take a free 45min guided tour for a behind the scenes glimpse at this iconic building.

Grand Opera House

Harbour Commissioners Office

The earliest building (east front) was designed in 1854 by the Board engineer George Smith with a clock tower to regulate sailings. The second phase in 1895 (Corporation Square) contains the splendid public rooms; the modern office block was added in 1970.

The headquarters of the Harbour Commissioners, responsible for overseeing the development and running of Belfast Port, has on show the magnificent captain’s table and chairs which Gilbert Logan designed for Titanic, but which were delivered just too late (it is said they were subsequently shipped to Southampton, just in time to see Titanic disappear on the horizon). Lord Pirrie, himself a Harbour Commissioner, would have been a frequent, and persuasive, presence in the boardroom. Nearby, are two restored graving docks used by William Ritchie, Belfast’s first major shipbuilder.

Lyric Theatre

As the only full-time producing theatre in Northern Ireland, the Lyric makes a unique and vital contribution to the community. Its mission is to produce high-quality professional theatre that is alive to the complex cultural experience and diverse traditions of the community, and to use the unique power of live theatre to empower, inspire, engage and educate.After an extensive capital build project the Lyric Theatre is almost three times the size of the old theatre, the theatre has three distinct areas. The 389 seat Northern Bank Stage is the main performance area, providing an extra 85 seats in a single steep rake. The intimacy of the old theatre remains as the body of the audience is not broken by balconies or barriers ensuring actors and audience share the same space. A second performance studio accommodates between 110 and 172 people, can be adapted to suit any performance style and will explore experimental work as well as reimagining classic plays and developing the skills of local artists. The third space is a rehearsal room the same size as the main auditorium stage.Other facilities include an education suite, dressing rooms, board room, cafe/bar and river terrace, and a range of corporate entertaining suites overlooking the Lagan and Botanic Gardens.

Museum of Orange Heritage

The Museum of Orange Heritage, through excellent audio visual and interactive exhibits, not only focuses on the history and traditions of the Orange Institution but also highlights Orangeism around the world. In addition, it encourages understanding and addresses many of the recent negative perceptions of The Orange Order via well designed and informative exhibits. View many original artefacts, many dating from 1689, such as King William III’s saddle cloth, a letter written by King William III with signature and intact seals, The Cork Statuette and many more fraternal exhibits. This accredited museum is a ‘must see’ for anyone with an interest in Northern Ireland’s role in the Second World War. Stormont Estate

Stormont Castle was built in 1858 in baronial style, complete with turrets, battlements and conical caps. Its flamboyant exterior is said to have inspired that of Scotland’s Balmoral Castle. After surviving demolition plans in 1921, the Castle became the official residence of the NI Prime Minister and, in today’s devolved NI Assemby, houses the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. The building is not accessible by the general public (except during Sept’s Heritage Open Days). Still, it’s nice to admire from behind the security barrier.

The Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Memorial Garden

Created to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who served in the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross, it is designed to create a ‘journey through policing’.There is much for visitors to see and experience. The Garden History Trail has InformationPanels which tell the Story of Policing. In addition,Guides supplement this information with their own experiences of policing. The ‘Area of Peace’ is where visitors can reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice paid by RUC GC officers who were murdered by terrorists and also those who died in Service during the RUC’s lifetime (1 June 1922 -3 November 2001). The whole experience is complemented by the memorials, planting and seating areas where visitors can relax and take in the history. Open daily by appointment for visitors and is situated adjacent to the PSNI Memorial Garden inside PSNI Headquarters.

Located at the Queen’s Yard more colloquially known as the Main Yard, are the twin slipways of the Titanic and Olympic White Star passenger liners.

Initiated by Titanic Quarter Ltd,Titanic Quarter Ltd’s the consultations with the Environment & Heritage Service led to the statutory scheduling of both slipways and the adjacent waterways in the Victoria Channel into which the White Star liners were launched. The slipways with the city dominant Arrol Gantry cranes remained in use until the 1960’s.

Window On Wildlife (WOW) Belfast

If you’ve never visited the RSPB’s nature reserve in the heart of industrial Belfast then prepared to be WOWed! The newly refurbished Window on Wildlife ( WOW ) offers stunning views of the wide variety of birds and wildlife which call the reserve home. Friendly staff and volunteers are always on hand to help you identify what you see! Two new hides have been constructed from shipping containers to tie in with their industrial surroundings and the visitor centre now features a community room and refreshment area, as well as information on the rich history of the harbour and the formation of the reserve back in 1998.

Free entry for RSPB members. £3 for adults and £1.50 for concessions.
BY BUS: The No. 26/26A bus service from City Hall to Holywood Exchange runs past the reserve on Mon-Fri.

BY ROAD: From Airport Road West (A2), there are two signposted entrances.
From the Dee Street entrance, the reserve is two miles on the left.

From the Holywood Exchange entrance (Closed Sunday), it is one mile on the right.

Custom House Square

The chiselled heads of Neptune, Britannia and Mercury gaze down from this stately 1850’s Italianite building whose sweeping steps have long been a platform for protests and speeches galvanising the working man. Look out for the bronze sculpture of a Speaker representing this oratorical past. Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope used to work here, and is commemorated with a Blue Plaque. The pedestrianised Square provides a sparkly space for Sk8er Bois, science toys, illuminated fountains tracing the reclaimed River Farset, Belfast’s oldest drinking fountain for horses and the occasional al fresco event.

Gaeltacht Quarter

Recent political history dominates West Belfast and the Gaeltacht Quarter, and many oversea visitors are amazed at how close the Nationalist Falls and Unionist Shankill Roads are – a walk along connecting Lanark Way takes you to the Peace Wall. This West Belfast Map takes you on a journey along the main sights in and around the Falls Road: Until 2005 the top two floors of Divis Tower (1) were used for surveillance by the British Army. Coiste Political Tours leave from its base Mon-Sat 11am and Sun 2pm. St. Peter’s Cathedral (2) was built in the Gothic Revival style and its twin spires can be seen across the city.

The International Wall (3) is a constantly changing tableau of global conflicts and issues with particular support among the community. Falls Remembrance Garden (4) commemorates those who have died or been imprisoned for political reasons as far back as 1921. Conway Mill (5) is a 19th century linen mill and listed building now used as a community and arts hub. A cafe, craft shops and Irish Republican History Museum are located inside. The famous Bobby Sands Mural (6) is on the side of the Sinn Fein offices. Clonard Monastery (7) boasts magnificent mosaics and a 6m-wide stained-glass rose window. It is home to the Catholic order of Redemptorists and, in 1994, staged secret talks leading to the IRA cessation. An Cultúrlann (9) contains a theatre, gallery, restaurant and shop across its three
floors. Visit its Tourist Information Office for lots more information on accommodation, attractions, tours and events including August’s West Belfast Festival (Féile an Phobail).

At 37.5m high, Rise (10) is Belfast’s largest public art sculpture and know locally as the Balls on the Falls. The James Connolly Plaque (11) marks this famous Irish Nationalist and 1916 Easter Rising hero’s former home. Cross-denominational City Cemetery (12) has many industrial, religious and political leaders among its 250,000 graves, and a sunken wall divides Protestant and Catholic plots. Bog Meadows Nature Reserve (13) and Falls Park (14), with its playground and Playing Fields, are among the Quarter’s finest green spaces. Milltown Cemetery (15) is Belfast’s main Catholic cemetery and contains thousands of graves and memorials. The Gasworks

The Gasworks distinctive funnel and clock tower mark the place where the city’s gas-making industry began production in the 19th century. The area offers a quiet place to escape from the bustle of the nearby city centre and makes an ideal starting point for a pleasant walk or cycle along the River Lagan towards Donegall Quay or upstream towards the Lagan Towpath and Lagan Valley Regional Park.

Gasworks has been the site of Belfast’s gas-making industry since the 19th century. The site, built on ground owned by the Marquis of Donegall, opened in 1822 and supplied gas for street lighting and domestic and industrial use.

Belfast Corporation (now the Belfast City Council) used their profits from the gas industry to pay for the construction of Belfast City Hall, which opened in 1906.

By the end of World War II in 1945, around 120,000 people were using gas from the Gasworks site. However, by the 1960s, demand declined as new technologies began to emerge and production finally stopped altogether in 1985.

The Gasworks site was purchased by the council, together with central government and the Laganside Corporation, in the early 1990s. The land was considered unsuitable for most uses, due to contamination, but a major refurbishment programme, part-funded by the European Union, soon turned the area into a modern business park.

IRISH ROCK N ROLL MUSEUM EXPERIENCE

The Irish Rock n Roll Museum Experience based
in the centre of Templebar is home to not just
unique artifacts and memorabilia from legends

The National Botanic Gardens are an oasis of calm and beauty in the city. They are noted for their fine plant collections, holding over 16,000 plant species and cultivars from a variety of habitats from all around the world. BATTLE OF THE BOYNE VISITOR CENTRE – OLDBRIDGE HOUSE AND GARDENS

the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre is located
in the restored 18th century Oldbridge House.
Fought in July 1690, between King William III
and King James II, the battle was the largest ever
attended battle in Ireland with over 60,00 troops

interactive displays of costumes, weaponry and
life of the soldiers. Relax in the beautiful Victorian

Dublin City Hall

The magnificent City Hall, formerly a financial
centre for the merchants of Dublin, became
the centre of municipal government in 1852. An
outstanding example of the Georgian architecture
for which Dublin is world-renowned, the
spectacular entrance hall or Rotunda can be
hired as a venue for corporate events, filming,
fashion shows or civil marriage ceremonies. In the
atmospheric vaults, a multimedia exhibition unlocks
key moments in the history of the city and 2016
brought some exciting new additions such as
the original 1916 proclamation and Postcards
in the 1916 Rising. Information on any upcoming
temporary exhibitions featured in the exhibition space is available on City Hall’s social
media channels. Talks on the history of the building are available for groups by prior
arrangement and a charming café and gift shop on site add to the ambience of this
wonderful city treasure.

GPO Witness History Visitor Centre

Winner of the Micheletti Award (European Museum Academy Awards 2017), GPO Witness History is located in the iconic GPO (General Post Office) building. The GPO
was a focal point of the 1916 Easter Rising and the visitor attraction focuses on the rising, the aftermath of this rebellion and modern Irish history up to the present. Also see the first ever permanent Irish Flag exhibition. This engaging and interactive experience brings history to life though electronic touch screens video, audio visual booths, sound and authentic artefacts –many previously unseen. Adult €14.
